I wrote this a month ago, amid the tortuous delirium that is the holiday season.
Compiling images from the prior month or so before that
so here it is, entirely unfinished, no snazzy intro, we're just gonna jump in 'cause it ain't gonna get posted otherwise

(nothing here, just a breath before the onslaught)

-the big curves had to be at least close, as the groove would conceal all but the most egregious of disparity

using a combination of rip saw, hatchet, slick and spokeshave I got as close as possible, then removed an eighth from the bottom edge so the whole panel will float between the two rails

Simply a matter of trial and error

The biggest challenge by far is the lack of space in my shop, most of the parts are nearly eight feet

definitely bashed my headlights with a plane a time or two

double check the groove before cutting

cutting the tongue and tenon is simple and straightforward

and chopping the mortice and groove is equally quick

What a pleasure when the whole assembly slides home freely-

I had every intention to complete this post long before the new year
I was distracted by other endeavors

which would turn out to be dead ends
then come home to a whole new project

and am still seeking moments to find that one through to completion

leap

yes folks it's that time of year...

the temps are back to forgiving and there's some sawing and planing to do!

secret new favorite tools

found I could rip one eight foot slab in ten minutes...

flatten...

true...

scribble on it a bit...

then chop the tenon cheeks, no problem

ripping the waste, on the other hand, gonna have to get creative

please don't let OSHA know about this

the idea to do this arrived after a catastrophic bout with a Japanese saw and the complete mental breakdown and near abandonment of the whole damn thing

not bad though, huh?

La de da, life goes on, chop the waste...

marvel in your "craftsmanship"

suck it up because you know nobody including those in hell will ever ever ever see this joint again after you destroy the photos of it

really put that new hammer to good use

check to make sure you went far enough

and then, conversely, worry that you've gone too far

yay, all that work and there's nothing to show for it!

'cept it doesn't budge even dry

yup, time to move on

course

medium

fine

grooves in lower rail to accept panel

next up: panel joinery

molasses

What follows is a visual essay

I've performed and recorded every one of these steps before

there's nothing new here

although eliminating the shooting board and just using my benchtop has been liberating

and I guess woking in pine has been new

everything goes twice as fast

everything

and everything unplaned comes out fuzzy

and it's prone to spelch

and dings

and pretty much just breathing too hard on one spot

and it's impossible to erase errant marks

and you really have to watch the end of your cut

and take it easy

but joinery is almost cheating in pine

my tolerance in maple

fits the first time in pine

pine makes me feel like a woodworking demigod

in an hour I can realize something that in maple might take days

sorry, my "days" is simply "minutes" to someone else

although I did rough then smooth the curves on the legs in under an hour

that was my Tuesday

the dry fit is so tight I feel the need to caress some of the joinery and just give it all some breathing room

a decision on finish is yet to come, I have just begun to walk that path
